EU Regulation n. 2018/462 - New food product: the use of l-ergothioneine is allowed in 5 food products, as well as in food supplements

The European Commission has allowed the use, as a new food product, of the substance l-ergothioneine, as well as in food supplements, even in soft drinks, in milk-based beverages, in fresh dairy products, in cereal bars and in chocolate based products, according to the concentrations provided therein.

The Regulation in question will apply starting from 10 April 2018.

Provisions envisaged by EU Regulation no. 2018/462

The new EU Regulation authorizes the use of the substance l-ergothioneine:

  • in non-alcoholic beverages, with a concentration not higher than 0.025 g / kg;
  • in milk-based beverages with a concentration not exceeding 0.025 g / kg;
  • in fresh dairy products (3), with a concentration not exceeding 0.040 g / kg;
  • in cereal bars, with a concentration not exceeding 0.2 g / kg;
  • in chocolate based products, with a concentration not exceeding 0.25 g / kg.

The substance l-ergotionein was previously authorized in food supplements in concentrations not exceeding:

  • 30 mg / day for the general population (excluding pregnant and lactating women);
  • 20 mg / day for children older than 3 years.

Indication to be reported on the label of food supplements: the name of the new food on the label of food products containing it is "l-ergotionein".
